Much attention has been given to the role of sarcopenia in the decline of functional ability and increase in falls associated with advancing age. However, more recently, the role of dynapenia has gained prominence in the research literature indicating that it may be a more critical factor in maintaining functional capacity with advancing age. Muscle power is an important aspect of function that declines earlier and more precipitously than muscle strength in older adults and has a higher correlation to functional capacity. Studies indicate that power training methods show great promise in improving function and reducing falls. This session will explore the research of power training with older populations and provide practical applications for the practitioner.
